The opening day of the Test proved to be an engaging battle between bat and ball, with both teams giving their all. But in the end, India wins the first Test against the West Indies. India’s opening duo, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, provided a robust start to the innings, forging an impressive partnership of 139 runs. The pitch at Queen’s Park Oval was anticipated to be more lively than the turning track in Dominica, but the curator opted to leave minimal grass on the surface. The West Indies pacers tried to utilize the short ball tactic early on against the Indian openers, but Rohit and Jaiswal skillfully countered them, unleashing impressive shots, including powerful pulls and drives.
As Day 2 approaches, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli, hoping to witness him reach a significant milestone in his illustrious career. If he can convert his solid start into a century, it will be a moment of celebration for cricket fans worldwide.
As the chase progressed, Imam-ul-Haq continued to exhibit great resilience and determination. He reached his eighth Test fifty with finesse, adding stability to the Pakistan innings. Jayasuriya, who had been the pick of the bowlers with four crucial wickets, managed to dismiss Imam as well, offering a glimmer of hope to the hosts. But Agha Salman rose to the occasion and joined Imam-ul-Haq at the batting crease. Together, they increased the run rate and sealed the victory with a powerful six.
The match had earlier seen some outstanding performances from both sides. In Sri Lanka’s first innings, Dhananjaya de Silva’s gritty knock of 122 was the highlight, helping the hosts post a total of 312 runs. However, Pakistan’s spin duo of Noman Ali and Abrar Ahmed showcased their skills, taking three wickets each to bowl out Sri Lanka for 279 runs in the second innings, setting the stage for Pakistan’s successful chase.
Notably, Pakistan’s pace spearhead, Shaheen Shah Afridi, made a memorable comeback to Test cricket after a year-long absence due to a knee injury. Afridi bagged five wickets in the match, reminding everyone of his prowess with the ball and how crucial he is for Pakistan’s bowling attack.
With this thrilling win, Pakistan has gained a significant advantage in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The focus now shifts to the second match, scheduled to commence in Colombo on Monday.
