India Defeats West Indies, Seals ODI Series 2-1
India maintained their supremacy and defeated West Indies, securing an emphatic 200-run victory in the thrilling third ODI and clinching the series 2-1. Despite a remarkable performance with four half-centuries and an impressive display by the bowlers, the Indian team faces lingering questions about their optimal combination as they approach the forthcoming World Cup. While skipper Rohit Sharma and the experienced Virat Kohli decided to rest and give opportunities to potential World Cup contenders, the resounding result does not completely alleviate concerns about the team’s overall stability.
Shubman Gill, who had a relatively subdued time in the Caribbean, finally found his form and rhythm with a well-crafted 85 off 92 balls. His opening partnership of 143 runs with the in-form Ishan Kishan, who scored a blistering 77 off 64 balls, laid the foundation for India’s commanding total of 351 for 5 after being asked to bat first.
Sanju Samson, with a brisk 51 off 41 balls, made a compelling case to be included as a reserve middle-order batter. Meanwhile, skipper Hardik Pandya’s explosive knock of 70 not out off just 52 balls, including five sixes and four boundaries, provided the final flourish on a favorable batting track.
In the chase, West Indies’ hopes were dashed by Mukesh Kumar’s impressive three-wicket haul (3/30 in 7 overs) during the first Powerplay, reducing them to 151 all out in just 35.3 overs. Despite a valiant 55-run partnership between Gudakesh Motie (39 not out) and Alzarri Joseph (26) for the ninth wicket, the result was never in doubt. Shardul Thakur (4/37 in 6.3 overs), Jaydev Unadkat (1/16 in 5 overs), and Kuldeep Yadav (2/25 in 8 overs) also contributed to the demolition of the West Indian batting line-up.
A Showcase of Talent: Rohit’s Standout Performances
While the victory was indeed convincing, the Indian team management will have several questions to address ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup and the subsequent World Cup, to be held on home soil.
One of the crucial dilemmas is the batting position of Ishan Kishan, whose performances in this series have bolstered his World Cup credentials. If regular opener KL Rahul is unavailable, it remains to be seen if Rohit Sharma would be willing to sacrifice his place at the top of the order to accommodate Kishan. Furthermore, if Kishan is asked to bat in the middle-order, at positions like No. 4 or 5, it might be unfair to expect him to adapt immediately. Nevertheless, Kishan’s talent and potential have been on full display throughout the series.
Another contender for the middle-order slot is Sanju Samson, who showcased his talent with a captivating innings, highlighted by four lusty sixes, including three against leg-spinner Yannic Cariah. However, as has been the case in the past, Samson faltered in converting his half-century into a substantial score, leaving question marks about his consistency.
Suryakumar Yadav’s batting potential was evident in his strokeplay, but he missed the opportunity to make a significant impact with the bat once again. His customary pick-up shot for a six and a slashed six off Jayden Seals showcased his talent, but he must learn to capitalize on such opportunities to cement his place in the team.
In the bowling department, the exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal from the playing XI raised eyebrows. With Ravindra Jadeja likely to be the first-choice spinner, it appears challenging for Axar Patel to find a place in the playing XI. Additionally, Mukesh Kumar’s performances have been commendable, but his chances of making it to the final 15-member squad seem limited, given the competition from established pacers like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur.
To further complicate matters, the fifth seamer spot requires a left-armer with variation. While Jaydev Unadkat fits the bill, his limitations as a bowler raise doubts about his inclusion in the squad for the entire duration of the World Cup.
