The legendary ex-Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is poised to receive the distinction of a national icon from the Election Commission of India (EC). This esteemed recognition is being conferred upon the 50-year-old in light of his consistent efforts to promote increased voter engagement in the electoral procedures.
Moreover, as part of this acknowledgment, a formal agreement will be established between Tendulkar and the election authority on Wednesday, August 23. This three-year arrangement entails Tendulkar taking on the responsibility of enhancing voter awareness throughout the nation in preparation for the upcoming elections.
By collaborating with Tendulkar, a figure who has significantly influenced the youth of the nation, the Election Commission (EC) aims to tackle the prevalent disinterest of young people in voting. They anticipate a beneficial effect from Tendulkar’s role as a national icon in motivating and engaging the country’s youth to participate positively in the voting process.
Throughout the years, the Election Commission (EC) has garnered support from various national icons to promote the importance of voting. In 2022, Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi was acknowledged as the EC’s national icon. Additionally, Aamir Khan, former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni, and Mary Kom held the role of national icons during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Upon recognizing Tendulkar’s contribution, the Election Commission (EC) issued a statement expressing their anticipation that the partnership with Tendulkar will yield an unmatched influence on the youth of the nation.
“This collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Tendulkar’s unparalleled impact with the youth for increasing voters’ participation in the forthcoming elections, especially in general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024,” the EC said in a statement.
Considered as one of the most exceptional talents in history, Tendulkar has established an unparalleled legacy. With an astonishing record of 100 centuries, Tendulkar’s influence on the youth of the nation was truly unprecedented.
The Master Blaster’s ODI career encompassed 463 matches, where he achieved a total of 18,426 runs at an average of 44.83 and a strike rate of 86.23. Within this format, he notched up an impressive 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries, achieving his highest score of 200*. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first player to achieve a double century in ODIs. His aggregate of runs makes him the highest run-scorer ever across both ODI and Test formats.
In addition to his remarkable achievements, Tendulkar contributed 10 runs in a single T20I match. Across a total of 664 matches, he amassed an impressive 34,357 runs, maintaining an average of 48.52 and a strike rate exceeding 67. His incredible record includes an astounding 100 centuries and 164 half-centuries. Notably, he holds the distinguished position of being the highest run-scorer in the history of international cricket. Moreover, he stands as the sole player to have achieved the extraordinary milestone of scoring 100 centuries in international cricket.
Throughout his extensive career, Tendulkar represented India in a total of six ICC Cricket World Cups. Notably, he was a pivotal member of the victorious 2011 World Cup-winning squad.
