Chelsea’s Lukaku Completes Loan to Roma
On Wednesday, Romelu Lukaku finalized his season-long loan transfer from Chelsea to Roma, receiving a hero’s welcome from enthusiastic supporters. Although Roma has yet to make an official announcement, Serie A has verified the completion of the deal in their list of finished transfers. Upon his arrival at Ciampino airport just outside the Italian capital on Tuesday, thousands of fans warmly received the Belgium striker. Lukaku’s arrival serves as a morale boost for Roma after a challenging beginning to the new Serie A season.
According to Italian media, Chelsea agreed to Roma’s offer of approximately six million euros ($6.5 million) for the loan of Lukaku, who was not in Chelsea’s immediate plans. This move provided Roma with the striker they were seeking, especially since Tammy Abraham suffered knee ligament damage towards the end of the previous season.
Lukaku has willingly accepted a reduction in his salary, going from an approximate 11 million euros to about 7.5 million euros, as part of his transfer to Roma. This adjustment was made to accommodate Roma’s financial constraints, as the club is adhering to a Financial Fair Play settlement agreement established with UEFA.
Roma has secured just one point from their initial two matches, and their struggle to translate their control of the game into goals was prominently evident in their recent 2-1 defeat against Verona on Saturday.
On the other hand, Chelsea has been actively attempting to permanently transfer Lukaku throughout the summer in an effort to conclude what has been deemed a disastrous transfer. This transfer initially involved a hefty 115 million euro purchase fee from Inter Milan, along with his substantial annual salary.
However, negotiations with Inter, the club Lukaku was loaned to last season, fell through, reportedly due to the club learning about his undisclosed conversations with their main rivals, Juventus and AC Milan.
Subsequently, Lukaku has been reunited with his former coach from Manchester United, Jose Mourinho, as he joins the capital club in their pursuit to qualify for the Champions League, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2018.
Lukaku, who is now 30 years old, grew increasingly frustrated during his time under former Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel due to tactical differences. He faced reprimand for participating in an unauthorized TV interview, which led to a public apology.
Subsequently, Lukaku was sent to Inter Milan last season, where he played a pivotal role in helping the team reach the Champions League Final.
Initially, Chelsea had insisted on a permanent deal to sell Lukaku during this summer transfer window, but they have had to reconsider their stance. The club had a desire to sell him to the Saudi Pro-League, but it appears that this option became less viable after Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic secured a move to the Middle East ten days ago, leaving fewer alternatives for Lukaku.
When Lukaku was originally signed from Inter two years ago, he was acquired for a then-club record fee of £97.5 million. During his first season back at Chelsea, he netted 15 goals; however, his discontent under German coach Tuchel and a series of injuries contributed to a challenging period.
