Asia Cup Camp Conducts Medical Tests for Cricketers

The much-awaited Asia Cup camp commenced on a promising note as the cricketers gathered on the first day to undergo comprehensive medical tests at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)’s esteemed medical department. With a total of 32 cricketers participating in the camp, 20 of them graced the field on the opening day, while the remaining members are expected to join the camp in Dhaka shortly, some of whom are currently part of the Tigers’ camp in Chittagong. The others are busy competing in various franchise cricket tournaments.

Shahriar Nafees, the assistant manager of BCB’s cricket management department, addressed the media and provided insights into the proceedings. He stated that all cricketers under BCB’s contract and those who recently represented the national team in various tournaments have been called upon to participate in the camp. The focus of the first day was primarily on medical tests, including blood tests, eye tests, and electrocardiograms (ECG). The medical evaluations aimed to ensure the players’ overall well-being and identify any potential health concerns that might impact their performance during the rigorous training sessions ahead.

Nafees elaborated on the schedule, revealing that in the following two days, the cricketers would undergo thorough screenings by team physios. This screening would assess the condition of their bones and muscles, vital for maintaining peak physical fitness. The comprehensive medical and physio screening aimed to create a baseline understanding of each player’s health status, which would guide the training and fitness programs during the Asia Cup camp.

Following the two-day medical examination and physio screening, the cricketers’ next challenge is scheduled for August 3, when they will be subjected to a demanding fitness test. This test is expected to assess their endurance, strength, agility, and overall physical fitness levels. The results of this fitness evaluation would play a crucial role in determining the final squad for the Asia Cup.

Before the Asia Cup skill camp begins on August 8, the initial group of 32 members will be trimmed down to a more manageable 21 or 22 players. The final squad announcement is set to take place in the first week of August. During the skill camp, the national team’s coaching staff will return to Dhaka to provide specialized training to the selected players based on their roles and positions.

Nafees emphasized that a coordinated effort among various professionals, including physios, BCB doctors, fitness trainers, bowling coaches, and batting coaches, was essential in guiding the players throughout the camp. Each expert would assume responsibility for specific aspects of the players’ training regimen, ensuring a holistic approach towards enhancing their performance.

However, notable players from the national team were absent from the fitness camp due to their engagements in international leagues. Litton Das and Afif Hossain were participating in the Global T20 League in Canada, while the talented Shakib Al Hasan joined the ongoing Lankan Premier League (LPL). Towhid Hridoy and Shoriful Islam were also occupied with their commitments in the LPL. Moreover, players like Taskin Ahmed and Mushfiqur Rahim, who were part of the Zim-Afro T-10 League, were expected to join the camp after a well-deserved rest period.

Addressing the issue of players participating in franchise cricket, Nafees clarified that five cricketers—Shakib, Litton, Afif, Shoriful, and Hridoy—were currently competing in international leagues, adhering to specific dates mentioned in their No Objection Certificates (NOCs). The players were granted permission to complete their obligations in the respective leagues before joining the Asia Cup camp. In the event that their respective teams do not advance to the finals, they would join the camp earlier.
