Bangladesh Tigers’ Asia Cup Fitness Camp Begins
With the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2023 just around the corner, the Bangladesh national cricket team, also known as the Tigers, is leaving no stone unturned to prepare for the prestigious tournament. A fitness camp, slated to begin on Monday at the iconic Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, will mark the first phase of their preparations. The camp is set to include approximately 32 talented cricketers, but the Bangladesh Cricket Board has chosen to keep their names under wraps for undisclosed reasons.
Minhajul Abedin, the chief of the national selection panel, shed some light on the team’s preparations during a press briefing in Mirpur on Sunday. He announced that a 21- or 22-member preliminary squad for the Asia Cup would be declared later, following the conclusion of the week-long fitness camp. Interestingly, the squad will not be selected based on the results of the yo-yo test scheduled for August 3, as the board merely aims to assess the fitness levels of the players ahead of the tournament.
“We will have a yo-yo test on August 3. We want to see the level of the fitness of the cricketers. The results will however, not affect their selection. It is just to see what level they are in at the moment in terms of fitness. We have listed 32 cricketers for the fitness camp. The skill camp will start on August 8 so before that we will announce a 21- or 22-member squad for the Asia Cup,” informed Minhajul to the media in Mirpur Sunday.

“We are not naming the 32-member squad but will announce the 21-, 22-member squad. The 32-member squad involves players from the national dressing room, Bangladesh Tigers program and High Performance Unit,” the former Bangladesh captain added.
While speculation is rife in the media about the potential inclusion of Bangladesh One Day International captain, Tamim Iqbal, in the squad, Minhajul Abedin stated that the selection panel is still unaware of his latest injury status. According to media reports, Tamim Iqbal, who is expected to arrive in Dhaka from London on Monday, has recently undergone two injections to address a lower back injury. The star batsman is currently on a week-long break and is projected to resume light intensity training upon his return.
“We [the selection panel] have not received any update from the medical team yet. We are expecting to receive a detailed report [on Tamim] before finalizing the team [for the Asia Cup]. We are expecting him to recover soon and join the team,” assured Minhajul Abedin.
The build-up to the Asia Cup has been marred by political tensions between India and Pakistan, causing uncertainty over the hosting of the tournament. The Asian Cricket Council, in an attempt to address the situation, announced a “hybrid” format for the six-nation tournament. While Pakistan remains the host nation, additional venues in Sri Lanka were introduced to accommodate the matches.
The revised schedule will see only four of the 13 games being held in Pakistan. Bangladesh will commence their campaign in Group B with an encounter against Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on August 31. The team will then head to Lahore for their second and final group stage match against Afghanistan at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium on September 3.
