Dinesh Karthik Gets Unwanted IPL Batting Record
Dinesh Karthik, the wicketkeeper-batter for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), found himself in the record books for all the wrong reasons during his team’s recent clash against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday. The match, held at the M Chimmaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, saw Karthik being dismissed for a golden duck by Kuldeep Yadav.
Karthik was dismissed for a two-ball duck by Adam Zampa, marking his 16th duck in the IPL, a record he now shares with Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma. Following closely behind them are Sunil Narine of the Kolkata Knight Riders and Mandeep Singh, both with 15 ducks to their name in the IPL.
Recently, Jos Buttler, the explosive Rajasthan Royals opener, has recorded four ducks in the current IPL season, placing him among the seven players in IPL history to achieve this unfortunate record.
Karthik’s IPL Story
Karthik, who has played for six different teams in his IPL career, has been part of the tournament since its inaugural season in 2008. Starting with the Delhi Daredevils, he later joined Kings XI Punjab before stints with the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions, and Kolkata Knight Riders. He returned to RCB last season.
After an impressive performance in the 2022 IPL season, which earned him a comeback to the Indian national team, Karthik has struggled immensely in the current tournament. With just 9 runs in four innings, his campaign has been dismal thus far. Notably, this is the second time in the 2023 IPL that he has been dismissed for a duck, following his early exit in RCB’s season opener against the Mumbai Indians.
Karthik’s performance in the IPL 2023 has been disappointing thus far. In 12 matches, he has scored only 140 runs at an average of 12.72 and a strike rate of 135.92. His highest score in the tournament this year is a mere 30 runs.
Match Highlights
Turning to the match itself, RCB batted first and scored 171/5 in 20 overs. Kohli (18) and Du Plessis (55 off 44 balls) had a good opening partnership. Du Plessis and Maxwell (54 off 33 balls) added 69 runs for the second wicket. Despite losing wickets regularly, Rawat’s quick cameo (29* off 11 balls) helped RCB reach a competitive total. Zampa (2/25) and Asif (2/42) bowled well for RR.
Chasing 172, RR struggled from the start and couldn’t challenge RCB’s bowlers. Hetmyer (35) resisted, but the other batsmen, including Root (10), didn’t contribute much. RR were all out for 59 runs in 10.3 overs, the third-lowest total in IPL history. Parnell (3/10) was RCB’s standout bowler, supported by Bracewell (2/16) and Sharma (2/19). Siraj and Maxwell took a wicket each.
Conclusion
With this victory, RCB has climbed to the fifth position in the IPL standings, having secured six wins and six losses, accumulating a total of 12 points. Their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs remain alive. On the other hand, the Rajasthan Royals have slipped to sixth place with six wins, seven losses, and 12 points. Their chances of making it to the playoffs now seem slim.
As the IPL season progresses, both teams will be looking to build on their performances and secure crucial victories in their remaining matches to enhance their playoff prospects.
