Indian women’s cricket captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, has been suspended for her team’s next two One-Day International matches following two breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct. The breaches occurred during the third match of their ICC Women’s Championship series against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The incident occurred on a Saturday, prompting disciplinary actions from the International Cricket Council (ICC). For her first breach, Kaur was fined 50% of her match fee, and three demerit points were added to her disciplinary record for a Level 2 offence. This violation was related to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision,” specifically when Kaur expressed her frustration by hitting the stumps with her.

Additionally, Kaur was fined 25% of her match fee for a Level 1 offence due to her second breach of the Code of Conduct. This breach pertained to “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.” The incident occurred during the presentation ceremony, where Kaur criticized the umpiring in the match.

After being charged, Kaur admitted to both offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing, and the disciplinary actions were finalized based on her acceptance of the charges.

The on-field umpires Tanvir Ahmed and Muhammad Kamruzzaman, Moniruzzamman Sarker, and Ali Arman levelled the charges. According to the ICC’s Code of Conduct, Level 2 breaches carry penalties ranging from 50 to 100 per cent of a player’s match fee and three or four demerit points. On the other hand, Level 1 breaches result in a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

Due to her four demerit points, Kaur has incurred a two-suspension point penalty, leading to her suspension from India’s forthcoming matches. Two suspension points translate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever comes first for the player or player support personnel.

Kaur’s actions during the match and post-match ceremony sparked controversy and drew attention from fans, players, and cricketing authorities. Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana expressed her disappointment and urged Kaur to display better manners on the field. This suspension serves as a reminder to all players about the importance of upholding the spirit of the game and adhering to the ICC’s Code of Conduct. Such disciplinary measures aim to ensure fair and respectful conduct on the field and maintain the integrity of the sport.
