The Indian cricket team, currently in a training camp near Bengaluru, had a rest day on Sunday. According to insiders, the progress has been satisfactory so far, especially for Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, who are returning after recovering from injuries. The training camp is set to resume on Monday.

Amid speculation about Rahul’s ability to keep wickets, it’s now clear that the 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, who was recovering from thigh surgery and a three-month break, has started practicing wicket-keeping. While his batting readiness was not in question, doubts lingered about his wicket-keeping skills, which led the selectors to include Sanju Samson as a reserve. However, Rahul seems to be making strides in the right direction.

Sources indicate that he will take on more wicket-keeping responsibilities on Monday, a day before the team heads to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup. The plan is for him to be ready to keep wickets during the Asia Cup matches, especially the later ones. India’s first match is scheduled against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2. Jasprit Bumrah & Co, who were part of the recently-concluded T20I series in Ireland, will join the Indian players on Monday.

Reflecting on his journey, Iyer shared his experience of dealing with pain and his joy at rejoining the Indian team.

I’m really happy to be back with the team and see smiles all around. I’m excited to be back. I had a nerve compression, a slipped disc that was compressing the nerve, causing excruciating pain down to the bottom of my toe. It was really painful, and I struggled to explain what I was going through.

After the injury, I spent two days in the hospital and then went back home. I rested for about 10 days. After the surgery, I spent three weeks in London for follow-up appointments with the doctor. As we gradually started running sessions, the first one was extremely tough. For me, it’s crucial to stay in the present and focus on my routines. I don’t want to dwell on the past or worry about the future. I’m happy to be here and embracing every moment.
