South African cricketer Kagiso Rabada has made history by becoming the fastest bowler to reach 100 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing for the Punjab Kings, Rabada broke the previous record held by Lasith Malinga during a match against the Gujarat Titans on Thursday, April 13.

The 27-year-old achieved the feat in just 64 matches, beating Malinga’s record of 70 matches.

In addition to breaking Malinga’s record, Rabada also surpassed Dwayne Bravo’s record for the least number of balls required to take 100 wickets in the IPL. Rabada reached the milestone in 1438 balls, while Bravo achieved it in 1619 balls.

On the field, Rabada achieved the record with the dismissal of Wriddhiman Saha. Saha was off to a flying start and had scored 30 runs off just 19 deliveries, hitting five fours.

However, in the fifth over, Saha attempted to hit a short-of-length delivery for six, aiming for the longest boundary of the ground. Although the ball looked destined to clear the ropes, it fell short and was caught by Matthew Short on the boundary, giving Rabada his 100th IPL wicket.

That’s 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐇𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐃! 🤌

Rabada’s IPL Story

Rabada started his IPL career with the Delhi Capitals in 2017 and has been playing for the Punjab Kings since 2022. He took 76 wickets during his five-year stint with the Delhi Capitals and continued his good form with the Punjab Kings in IPL 2022, taking 23 wickets in the season.

His best year in the IPL was in 2020, when he claimed 30 wickets at an average of 18.26, earning him the prestigious Purple Cap. He was also a crucial factor in the Delhi Capitals reaching the IPL 2020 final, where they lost to the Mumbai Indians.

Punjab Kings acquired Rabada for Rs. 9.25 crore last season, recognizing his potential as a match-winner. He has been a star performer with the ball across the last three seasons and has settled in well since making his IPL debut in 2018.

Rabada had missed the first two matches of the IPL 2023 due to national duty but returned to the team for the match against the Gujarat Titans.

Players on the Record List

Rabada’s achievement puts him in elite company, with only four other players have taken 100 or more IPL wickets in fewer than 100 matches. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel are joint third-fastest with 81 matches each, while Rashid Khan achieved the milestone in 83 matches.

Although Rabada’s achievement was historic, it was a disappointing night for the Punjab Kings as they lost their second match in a row. After being put in to bat first, the Kings kept losing wickets regularly, and despite Shahrukh Khan’s best efforts at the end, they could only manage to score 153. The Gujarat Titans chased down the target in 19.5 overs.

The Kings will be hoping for a change in fortunes in their upcoming matches, as they look to make a push for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Rabada will be looking to add to his tally of wickets and continue his impressive form in the IPL.
