KL Rahul Ruled Out of IPL and Doubtful for WTC Final

KL Rahul’s injury has come as a big blow to both the Lucknow Super Giants and the Indian cricket team. The star batter was injured while fielding during a match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, and it is believed that he may be out of action for some time.

Rahul’s scans are yet to be confirmed by the BCCI and NCA doctors, but reports suggest that he may be suffering from a hamstring or hip injury. The Mangalore-born cricketer had undergone hernia surgery in Germany 10 months ago, so all factors are being considered before deciding on his return.

Reports suggest that he may not feature in IPL 2023 and could also miss the World Test Championship final against Australia. The extent of his injury will be clearer once the results of his scans are out, and a decision will be taken by the BCCI.

Latest Report on LSG

Recently, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match, with Krunal Pandya captaining the side in the absence of regular skipper KL Rahul. However, Krunal’s debut as captain was not very successful as he became the third batter to be dismissed on a duck in his first match as captain. After the first innings, the match was called off due to rain. LSG’s Ayush Badoni scored a half-century, but CSK’s Moeen Ali was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets for just 13 runs in his four overs.

LSG struggled to score without KL Rahul and lost early wickets. Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni tried to build a partnership, but Pooran was dismissed for 20 runs. Badoni continued to score useful runs and scored his second IPL half-century in just 30 balls. However, LSG could only manage to score 125 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs. The match had to be called off due to persistent rain, which interrupted play during the final over.

Team Status

In the absence of Rahul, Ishan Kishan is likely to replace him in the Indian squad. The young wicketkeeper-batter was part of the national squad in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but was dropped from the squad for the WTC. However, with limited options available, Kishan is the favorite to travel to England as KS Bharat’s backup if Rahul fails to recover on time.

The situation is not just limited to Rahul, as left-handed pacer Jaydev Unadkat’s injury is also a matter of concern for the Indian management. Unadkat hurt his shoulder during practice and has already been ruled out of the 16th edition of the IPL. The BCCI may name replacement(s) once the clarity on Unadkat’s situation is known.

The Indian team will leave for London immediately after the league stage of the IPL, which ends on May 21. Those who do not qualify for the playoffs will depart for the UK on May 23. This will give them enough time to acclimatize and prepare for the WTC final, which is scheduled to start on June 7 at The Oval.
