Kohli Reaches New Record in IPL 2023

The RCB captain completed his fifty in just 33 balls, taking his overall tally to 333 runs in the tournament. He also set a new record by becoming the first player to score 3000 runs at a single venue in the T20 format. Kohli achieved this feat at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
As a result, he surpassed Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim, who had scored 2989 runs at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. Mahmudullah is at the third spot with 2813 runs at the same venue as Rahim in 130 innings. Alex Hales and Tamim Iqbal complete the top five list having scored 2749 and 2706 runs at a single venue in T20 cricket, respectively.
A Downside to the Record
Despite his impressive performance, Kohli was dismissed for 54 runs by Andre Russell, thanks to a spectacular catch from Venkatesh Iyer. This brought an abrupt end to Kohli’s inning, but his contribution helped RCB chase KKR’s target of 201 runs.
Despite Kohli’s heroics, RCB’s weak fielding and batting ultimately led to their defeat, leaving the skipper furious. KKR’s spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Suyash Sharma created havoc in RCB’s top order before Andre Russell broke Kohli’s resistance to restrict RCB to 179 for eight.
In a post-match interview, Kohli admitted that RCB “handed” the victory to KKR and that his team was “certainly not up to standard.” He pointed out that they dropped a few catches, which cost them 25-30 runs, and that they hit the ball straight to the fielders when they needed to take wickets.
Following the match, RCB now has four wins out of eight matches, eight points, and sits in 5th in the standings. Their next match will be against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 1.
Kohli and RCB So Far
Despite the loss, Kohli has been leading RCB as a stand-in skipper for the past three matches as Faf du Plessis is nursing a rib injury. Under his captaincy, KKR managed to score 200 runs, with Jason Roy smashing 56 runs from 29 balls, including four boundaries and five sixes.
KKR skipper Nitish Rana also performed well, narrowly missing his fifty by scoring 48 off just 21 balls. Rinku Singh’s unbeaten 18-run inning, as well as David Wiese’s 12 from three balls, helped KKR reach 200/5 on the last ball of their inning, courtesy of a six from Wiese.
