Krunal and Hardik Pandya Set Unique IPL Record
In a thrilling encounter on Sunday evening, the Gujarat Titans registered a massive 56-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2023 match in Ahmedabad. With this win, the Gujarat Titans consolidated their position at the top of the table with 16 points from 11 matches. The Lucknow Super Giants are currently second with 11 points from 11 contests.
This match was particularly historic as it featured the Pandya brothers, Hardik and Krunal, as the opposition captains in IPL for the first time ever. Krunal, who is leading Lucknow, took a catch to dismiss his younger brother Hardik for 25 off Mohsin Khan’s bowling. After losing the toss, Hardik said, “We are short of words, and the family is emotional. Yes, I would like the boys to win here and own this place and express themselves.”
The two Pandya brothers are up against one another here in Ahmedabad.

GT Makes Records
The Gujarat Titans posted their highest-ever total in IPL by scoring 227/2, surpassing their previous best of 207/6 against Mumbai Indians last month. Shubman Gill was the batting star for the Gujarat Titans, scoring an unbeaten 94 off 51 balls with two fours and seven sixes. His tally of sixes is the most in an innings by a Gujarat Titans batsman in IPL, surpassing David Miller’s record of six sixes against Chennai Super Kings in 2022.
The Gujarat Titans were off to a flying start as opener Wriddhiman Saha made a quickfire half-century, racing to his 50 off just 20 balls. He was dismissed for 81 off 43 with 10 fours and four sixes. Thanks to Saha and Gill’s opening stand, the Gujarat Titans posted their best powerplay score of the season – 78/0 (run rate 13) in six overs.
Saha was the aggressor, contributing 54 off 23, while Gill’s share was 22 off 13. Saha and Gill also posted the highest first-wicket stand for the Gujarat Titans in IPL, putting on 142 in 12.1 overs, bettering their previous mark of 106 against Mumbai Indians at Brabourne Stadium in 2022.
LSG’s Response
In pursuit of 228, Lucknow Super Giants openers Quinton de Kock and Kyle Mayers added 88 for the first wicket in 8.2 overs. It took a brilliant diving catch in the deep by Rashid Khan to end Mayers’ innings of 48 off 32 (7 fours, 2 sixes). Later, de Kock, playing his first game of the season, departed for a 41-ball 70 with seven fours and three sixes.
However, Lucknow Super Giants lost their way later to surrender by 56 runs.
The Gujarat Titans bowlers put up a disciplined performance, restricting the visitors to 171/7 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The Gujarat Titans are now one step closer to securing a playoff berth, while Lucknow Super Giants need to bounce back quickly in their next match to stay in contention.
“I don’t think there’ll be bragging rights with Krunal,” said Hardik after the match. “Our love is too strong, I hope he does well. I’d have been happier if things had been closer and he had some bragging rights too.”
The Gujarat Titans will look to build on their impressive form and continue their winning streak in their upcoming matches, while Lucknow Super Giants will be hoping to turn their fortunes around and secure a playoff spot.
