Mbappe Becomes PSG’s All Time Top Scorer in Ligue 1
Kylian Mbappé has made history once again, this time becoming Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time leading scorer in Ligue 1. The 24-year-old football sensation scored the opener in PSG’s 3-1 victory over Lens on Saturday, taking his total tally to 139 goals in 169 Ligue 1 games.
Mbappé’s achievement overtakes Edison Cavani’s record of 138 goals in 200 league games.
His impressive record also follows his historic feat in March, when he scored his 201st goal for PSG, becoming the club’s all-time top scorer in all competitions.
Mbappe’s achievement is even more remarkable given the number of games he needed to reach the top spot. While Cavani scored 200 goals in 301 games, Mbappe managed to surpass the same tally in just 247 games, demonstrating his incredible scoring prowess.
The game against Lens was crucial for PSG, as they had lost two consecutive home games, which gave their title rivals hope. However, Mbappé and his teammates showed up and delivered an impressive performance. Lionel Messi, who had been in great form, also scored in the match after Mbappé’s brilliant assist.
Other Highlights in the Match
During the match, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi were in fine form, with Mbappe scoring the opener and setting up Messi for the third goal, taking his total goals for PSG to 203.
The game was evenly poised until Lens midfielder Salis Abdul Samed was sent off for a reckless challenge on PSG defender Achraf Hakimi in the 19th minute. Mbappe then scored in the 31st minute, followed by Vitinha doubling the lead in the 37th minute with a stunning long-range strike. Messi then scored a well-worked third goal with a precise low shot in the 40th minute.
The Lens was more impressive in the second half despite playing a player down. Fabian Ruiz’s handball gave Lens a penalty in the 60th minute, which Przemyslaw Frankowski converted. However, it was not enough for the visitors, and PSG held on to a crucial win.
Post Match Statements
The victory now places PSG nine points ahead of second-placed Lens, making it likely that they will win their 11th Ligue 1 title.
After the match, PSG coach Christophe Galtier was happy with the team’s performance, saying, “If there was a match we had to win, it was this one, after the two straight losses at the Parc. Lens are one of our rivals, and obviously, it was important to win.”
Galtier also acknowledged that the team must continue to work hard, with seven games left in the season. “We must continue to be focused. Our fixture list looks favorable, but it is only favorable if we invest ourselves fully and show great determination to win,” he added.
PSG’s next challenge will be against Angers at the Stade Raymond-Kopa on April 21. For now, Mbappé and his teammates can celebrate their latest achievement, thanks to the young superstar’s excellent performance on the pitch.
In other games, Rennes beat Reims 3-0 to move into fifth place, with Belgium winger Jeremy Doku scoring twice inside the first 20 minutes.
