Lionel Messi’s goal-scoring spree continues as he adapts to his new team, Inter Miami. In a Leagues Cup Round of 32 match against Orlando City on Wednesday night, Messi netted two goals in his third game with the team, helping Inter Miami secure a 3-1 victory. The match experienced a 95-minute delay due to thunderstorms.

Inter Miami coach Tata Martino praised Messi’s impact on the team, saying, “Something I said early on when we started, with him the most difficult things have become easier. But we are talking about a player that at the highest level of competition scores 40 goals a season.”

Messi opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match, skillfully controlling a pass from Robert Taylor with his chest, dribbling a few yards near the 6-yard box, and firing a shot that found the net under the crossbar. However, Orlando City managed to equalize 11 minutes later.

In the 72nd minute, Messi struck again, this time receiving a pass from Josef Martinez and flicking a right-footed shot inside the left post, putting Inter Miami ahead 3-1. The Argentine superstar has now scored five goals in three games since making his much-awaited MLS debut on July 21.

Martino expressed his admiration for Messi’s consistency, saying, “It is not illogical to think that he has scored five goals in three matches. Sometimes I feel we overdo it coming up with greater adjectives. It just comes down to talking about the best player in the world.”

The Inter Miami coach also highlighted that the second goal came from Messi’s right foot, showcasing his versatility beyond his celebrated left foot, which has produced goals from various angles and situations throughout his illustrious career.

“He’s been doing the same for 17-18 years,” Martino added. “He said he was coming here to compete and win. He is fulfilling what he said.”

Despite his outstanding performance, Messi had a brief scare in the second half when he collided with Orlando’s Mauricio Pereyra. The Argentine forward stayed on the ground for a couple of minutes, favoring his jaw, but eventually continued playing.

The match also saw Messi receiving his first yellow card with Inter Miami after a hard foul in the 21st minute.

Jordi Alba, Messi’s former teammate from Barcelona, made his Inter Miami debut, coming on as a substitute in the 64th minute.

The game faced delays due to thunderstorms, but Messi and his teammates remained focused, going through warm-ups twice before the match finally kicked off.

In his first two Leagues Cup matches with Inter Miami, Messi has shown his class, scoring crucial goals in victories against Cruz Azul and Atlanta United, proving that he is living up to his promise of competing and winning with his new team.

The victory against Orlando City has propelled Inter Miami to the Round of 16 in the tournament, where they will face Dallas FC. As Messi continues to adapt and shine in Major League Soccer, fans eagerly anticipate more magic from the legendary footballer on American soil.
