Tamim Iqbal Steps Down As ODI Captain

Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh’s senior-most batter, has announced that he is stepping down as the ODI captain with immediate effect. This decision follows his recent choice to retire from the 50-over format, which was promptly reversed due to eventful circumstances. According to reports, Tamim made this latest call as he eyes on lightening his workload ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

“As you know I had an important meeting with Jalal bhai [Jalal Yunus] and Papon bhai [Nazmul Hassan]. We have discussed what will happen going forward. Today I step down as Bangladesh cricket team ODI captain,” Tamim said in a press conference alongside the BCB president.

“I have taken injections but those treatments are almost hit and miss at this point. I have spoken of my problems with them. I have always thought about the team first,” he added.

“Stepping down would be the best possible thing. I talked to the PM today and I gave her the message as well and she made me understand everything really nicely. Main thing is, for the betterment of the team, I should step down as captain and try to give my best as a player whenever the opportunity comes.”

Tamim admitted that forcing the issue and participating in the upcoming Asia Cup would serve no purpose, but he remains optimistic about being available for the subsequent New Zealand series.

“If we had forced the issue, I could have played the Asia Cup but no one from the medical team or us sitting here wanted that. I’m very hopeful of the New Zealand series,” he expressed.

In March 2020, Tamim became the new captain of the Bangladesh ODI team, replacing Mashrafe Mortaza. Under his leadership, the team won 21 out of 37 50-over games, achieving a win percentage of 56.75%. This win percentage was slightly lower than Mortaza’s record (56.81%) as Bangladesh’s captain.

“The journey was fantastic and the result would speak for itself. I think I have done a very good job as captain. It could have been very selfish if I said that I want to stay on as captain,” Tamim said.

“See I may not have the captaincy tag on me but whenever I am playing, I will act as a captain. What I mean is whoever is the captain I will do everything and do my best to help the captain,” he continued.

With Tamim’s fitness for the Asia Cup is uncertain, and according to BCB cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus, he will be unavailable for the upcoming tournament.

“Two more weeks will pass after that before he can return to nets. As you know, by that time our schedule for the Asia Cup would resume and his intensity can’t increase before 21st. The team will leave for Asia Cup on 26th so it will not be possible for Tamim to return before the Asia Cup…This is why Tamim will not be available for the Asia Cup,” Jalal said.

“We will inform who will be the captain going forward,” he added.

The BCB is expected to announce the ODI captain in the next few days. Reports suggest that Shakib Al Hasan is hesitant to take on the role, but the board will make an effort to persuade him. If they are unable to convince him, Litton Das is the likely candidate to be named as the skipper.
