Messi’s Father in Talks with Barcelona Chief
Football fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating news about Lionel Messi’s future, with recent reports suggesting a potential return to Barcelona. The 35-year-old’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, met with Barcelona president Joan Laporta last month, adding further fuel to the transfer rumors.
While there has been speculation that Messi is hesitant to sign a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain, his camp has received confirmation of Barcelona’s interest through a third party.
However, reports say Jorge’s meeting with Laporta was not about transfer talks. Instead, it was about a special match at Camp Nou to honor Messi once he retires from European football.
When asked about his meeting with Jorge Messi, Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed, “We discussed the World Cup and a tribute match for Leo. However, since he’s currently at PSG, I prefer not to comment on his potential return.”
While Laporta did not mention any discussions regarding Messi’s return to Barcelona, radio personality Sique Rodriguez claimed that the topic was not addressed during the meeting.
Transfer News So Far
As it stands, Messi has an offer from PSG to renew his contract, while Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal is offering an incredible €420 million per year.
Despite PSG’s attempts to keep Messi in France with two new contract offers, the 34-year-old has turned them both down.
Additionally, the environment at the Parisian club has not been ideal, as fans have been booing him during matches, and there have been rumors of a rift between him and his teammate Kylian Mbappe, which have been denied.
Aside from Messi’s refusal to PSG, he has recently rejected Al-Hilal’s offer. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner remained intent on continuing in Europe beyond the current campaign, as has been reported previously.
Barcelona’s Status
Meanwhile, Barcelona has reportedly been working behind the scenes to assess the financial viability of bringing Messi back to the club, as their current financial situation is not strong enough to afford the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.
However, Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta confirmed that he met with Messi’s father, Jorge, but insisted that they did not discuss the player’s potential return to the club.
As per reports, the Blaugrana will offer Messi a salary of €10 million per year, along with incentives that include a share of their commercial profits from his return and sponsorship deals.
While there has been no formal offer from Barcelona yet, reports suggest that they will present the Argentine with a deal once they have improved their financial situation.
During his time at Barcelona, Messi scored 672 goals and cemented his status as one of the greatest players ever. If Messi does go back to Barcelona, he would be playing under Xavi, with whom he shared many memorable moments as a player.
However, Barcelona will have to move fast as Messi has already received highly lucrative offers from David Beckham’s MLS side Inter Miami and Qatari club Al-Hilal.
It remains to be seen if a transfer will materialize, as there are still many details to work out. However, the willingness of both parties to make it happen suggests that fans might see Messi donning the Blaugrana jersey again soon.
