Mahendra Singh Dhoni has set a new record in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by becoming the first player to captain an IPL side in 200 matches. Dhoni is a legendary figure in Indian cricket and has been one of the greatest players to have played for both India and the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

The match was against Rajasthan Royals and took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Following the match, Dhoni is the only player to captain a franchise in 200 games in the history of the tournament.

He has played 213 matches as captain in IPL, out of which he has led CSK in 199 games, the rest with now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants. Under Dhoni’s leadership, CSK has won the IPL four times.

Dhoni has been associated with the CSK side since the beginning of the league, except for the two years (2016-17) when the team was suspended due to the involvement of their officials in illegal activities.

Dhoni returned as the Chennai Super Kings captain last year after Ravindra Jadeja decided to drop himself as the CSK captain. After a half-season transition from Dhoni to Jadeja, Dhoni took over the reins once again. Despite hinting at his retirement last season, Dhoni has come back strong this year and is leading the team with vigor.

CSK started this season of the IPL with a defeat against Gujarat Titans but bounced back with two successive wins against Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians. The team is hoping for more success under Dhoni’s leadership and to continue their momentum in the next match.

Dhoni’s Record So Far

Dhoni has an impressive record as a captain in the IPL, leading CSK to a record nine finals and winning four of them (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021). He has scored the second most runs (4482) in IPL, behind Virat Kohli, who no longer leads the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Out of the 213 matches he has led, Dhoni has won 125 of them, lost 87 while one ended with no result, and he boasts of having the best win percentage (58.96%) in the history of the tournament.
In addition to his captaincy, Dhoni has also been a consistent performer with the bat. Recently, he became the seventh player in IPL history to score 5,000 runs, joining the likes of Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, David Warner, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, and AB de Villiers.

CSK’s Record so Far

As for CSK, they have hired big names this season, including Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes, in the hopes of transitioning once again. However, it is yet unclear who will take over the reins from MS Dhoni at the end of the season.

Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad could be a wildcard in the race for the captaincy position. Under Dhoni’s leadership, CSK became an institution that trusted non-conventional players in T20 roles and drove the franchise to success in four tournaments, the second-highest tally in the history of the Indian Premier League.

As one of the greatest captains in the history of the sport, Dhoni’s leadership and contributions to the IPL have made him a beloved figure among cricket fans worldwide. With his remarkable milestone of leading his team for the 200th time, Dhoni has once again cemented his place in cricket history.
