In a thrilling IPL game on Sunday, Rinku Singh stole the show with an incredible display of batting, securing a last-gasp victory for the Kolkata Knight Riders over the Gujarat Titans. Singh’s heroics saw him smash five sixes in a row, scoring 48 runs in just 21 balls and ensuring that KKR registered their second win in a row.

The game had been finely poised after a stunning hat trick from Rashid Khan put the Titans in the driving seat. However, with KKR needing 29 runs from the final over, Singh stepped up to the plate and produced what many are calling, the greatest finish in IPL history.

While there was jubilation in the KKR camp, it was a day to forget for young pacer Yash Dayal, who was on the receiving end of Singh’s incredible display. Dayal conceded five sixes in a row as the Titans suffered their first defeat of the season.

Singh’s performance also saw him break several records, including the highest target successfully achieved in a final over of an IPL match. His five sixes in an over also saw him join an elite club of just five players in IPL history to achieve the feat.

What to Know About Rinku Singh

Rinku, who hails from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was retained by KKR for INR 55 lakh ahead of IPL 2023. He was first acquired by KKR in 2018 for INR 80 lakh, and even though his first season didn’t go well, he was retained for IPL 2019.

Rinku worked on his batting with KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar during the off-season, and the results were visible in his 2018-19 Ranji Trophy outing for Uttar Pradesh.

Rinku was the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament with 953 runs in 10 innings and four centuries. The 25-year-old was also part of the Kings XI Punjab squad (now Punjab Kings) in 2017, but was handed a three-month suspension by the BCCI for taking part in a Ramadan T20 tournament in Abu Dhabi without seeking permission.

Rinku has played 40 First Class, 50 List-A, and 78 T20 matches, amassing 6,016 runs, with eight centuries and 41 fifties to his name. After his stunning final over onslaught, Rinku has once again shown his potential as a valuable member of the KKR squad.

After the Match

As a result of his performance, Singh earned the moniker “lord.” The moniker formed when his teammate Venkatesh Iyer hailed him as “lord” after he slammed five consecutive sixes in the last over, which led the team to victory.

In the aftermath of the match, the team had plenty to say about the overall game. Gujarat Titans’ stand-in skipper Rashid praised Rinku for playing outstanding innings when all odds were stacked against his side.

“It’s a tough game for us, especially for me as a captain. You need 30 plus in the last over, the same thing happened for us last year when we won. We will learn from it, and more importantly, a good game of cricket and the fans would have loved it. It was more about what he is most comfortable with, to trust his (Yash Dayal) plans,” Rashid said.

This victory will be a “great morale-booster” for the team, said Iyer. Rashid acknowledged that scores of 250 are not safe in T20, but as a bowler, he’s always trying to hit the right area. “Take positives from this, it’s still early in the competition, and learn from it,” he said.

Overall, it was a stunning display of cricket that will be remembered for years to come. While the Titans will be disappointed to have lost, the game showed just how unpredictable and exciting the IPL can be.
