Bad news for fans of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Indian cricket team: Shreyas Iyer, the team captain, and batting sensation, will miss the entire Indian Premier League and the World Test Championship final in June. The reason is that he needs to undergo back surgery abroad, as confirmed by sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The surgery is expected to keep Iyer out of action for at least five months, which means that his participation in the 50-over World Cup in India in October-November is uncertain. It’s a big blow for KKR and India, as Iyer has been in fantastic form with the bat and is a key player in both teams.

Before the Announcement

However, there were doubts about Iyer’s participation in future matches even before the surgery announcement. According to PTI reports, Iyer had already been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Australia, which began on March 17 in Mumbai.

When questioned about the player’s condition at the time, India captain Rohit Sharma had confirmed that the batter’s injury “wasn’t looking good at the moment” and that his comeback to competitive cricket was uncertain.

He also expressed his disappointment with Iyer’s injury and shared that he was uncertain about the timeframe for his return.

Iyer’s recurring lower-back injury first surfaced in December last year, after India toured Bangladesh. The injury resurfaced after fielding for over 167 overs during the Australian innings of the final Test of the series.

Iyer’s injury raised questions about the National Cricket Academy’s (NCA) policies. Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna had undergone delayed back surgeries, and Iyer’s injury highlighted the need for following proper rehabilitation procedures at the NCA.

Previously, unfit players had to feature in a domestic match before being selected for international matches. However, Iyer was directly selected to play a Test match without participating in the Irani Cup in Gwalior.

So far, not many details were given for an explanation, nor where exactly the player is going for his surgery.

What’s Next for India’s Team and KKR

As a result of the announcement, the World Test Championship final, which will see India take on Australia in London on June 7, will now have to be played without Iyer. The KKR, meanwhile, has named Nitish Rana as the interim captain for this IPL season.

Unfortunately, KKR will also have to deal with finding a replacement for Shakib al Hasan, who has recently pulled out from the IPL. However, Shakib’s absence could be a good thing for the Knight Riders as they now have the chance to sign a specialist for the final overs or a talented all-rounder to improve their team.

They could consider players like Australian fast bowler Riley Meredith, Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka, and Australian seamer Lance Morris, who have performed well in their respective leagues and can make the KKR team stronger.

For now, fans will be hoping for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery for Iyer. However, his participation in the 50-over World Cup in India in October-November could be touch and go.
