Tamim’s Retirement Saga Unsettles Hathurusingha

Tamim Iqbal’s sudden retirement from international cricket has once again shed light on the issues within Bangladesh cricket and raised questions about the role of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha. This incident adds to the growing list of problems that Bangladesh cricket has experienced under Hathurusingha’s tenure, including incidents involving players like Mashrafe bin Mortaza, Shakib al Hasan, Mahmudullah, and Mushfiqur Rahim in recent years.

Hathurusingha is currently in his second stint with the Bangladesh national team, having returned earlier this year. His previous term with the team ended on a bitter note, despite achieving success. He later went on to become the head coach of the Sri Lanka cricket team but faced difficulties there as well, with disputes arising between him and the players, including veteran Angelo Mathews.

The circumstances surrounding Hathurusingha’s return to Bangladesh were chaotic, as it came after Russell Domingo resigned from the position in December of the previous year. Despite the confidence and high hopes expressed by influential members of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), including President Nazmul Hasan, it appears that the situation has not improved as expected.

The unhealthy atmosphere in the dressing room, previously acknowledged by BCB President Nazmul, seems to have worsened. This is believed to be the underlying cause of Tamim’s unexpected and shocking decision to retire in the middle of a series and shortly before the World Cup.

However, Tamim’s retirement did not last long, as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, intervened in the matter and instructed him to withdraw his decision. Following a three-hour meeting with the Prime Minister, Tamim announced his decision to reverse his retirement, stating that it was impossible for him to say no to the country’s leader.

“I can say no to everyone but it is impossible for me to say no to the Prime [Sheikh Hasina] of the country. I had an extensive meeting her along with Mashrafe bhai [Bin Mortaza] and Papon bhai [Nazmul Hasan]. I have decided to withdraw my retirement,” said Tamim to the media.

The entire situation has undoubtedly put Hathurusingha in an uncomfortable position, as the matter has garnered attention beyond the confines of the BCB. Tamim’s actions sparked outrage not only within the cricket fraternity but also among the general public. With the Prime Minister becoming involved, it is evident that Hathurusingha is under immense pressure, even from those who previously supported him.

Hathurusingha is reportedly reflecting on whether he bears responsibility for the situation and has been discussing the matter with team members. His reaction to the Tamim issue remains unknown, as he has not interacted with the media since its occurrence.

Tamim has been granted a month-and-a-half-long leave, approved by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It remains unclear whether he will participate in the Asia Cup 2023 or directly join the camp for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, scheduled to take place in India in approximately three months.

The focus now shifts to how the BCB and Hathurusingha will handle Tamim’s return and ensure that the team remains on track for the upcoming major events. The resolution of these issues will be crucial for Bangladesh cricket as they aim to perform well in international competitions and maintain stability within the team.
