In a thrilling match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Vivrant Sharma etched his name in the record books by achieving the highest score on debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by an Indian player. Hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma’s remarkable performance broke a long-standing record that had stood strong for 15 years.

Facing the formidable Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad set a challenging target of 200 runs for the loss of five wickets. It was Sharma’s incredible contribution of 69 runs off just 47 balls that played a significant role in achieving this formidable total. His innings included nine fours and two sixes, captivating the spectators with his remarkable stroke play.

Sharma’s journey to this historic moment began in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier ODI domestic competition, in 2022. Representing Jammu and Kashmir, he emerged as the highest run-scorer for his team in the tournament, amassing an impressive total of 395 runs at an average of 56.42. He showcased his talent with one century and two fifties, leaving a lasting impression on cricket enthusiasts across the nation.

Other Star Performers

The previous record for the highest score by an Indian player on an IPL debut was held by Swapnil Asnodkar of the Rajasthan Royals. Asnodkar had scored 60 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in Jaipur back in 2008. His record had remained untouched for 15 years, making Sharma’s achievement all the more remarkable. Asnodkar had represented Goa in first-class cricket and the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

Gautam Gambhir, the current coach of the Lucknow Super Giants, also had an impressive debut in the IPL. While playing for the Delhi Daredevils in 2008, Gambhir scored 58 runs against the Rajasthan Royals, showcasing his exceptional talent from the very beginning.

Another notable debut performance was from Devdutt Padikkal, currently playing for the Rajasthan Royals. In 2020, Padikkal scored 56 runs on his IPL debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai, displaying immense promise at the young age of 22.

Mumbai Indians Performance

During the match against Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s opening batsmen, Vivrant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal, provided a solid start in the powerplay, not losing any wickets and adding 53 runs to the scoreboard. The duo went on to build an impressive partnership of 140 runs for the first wicket. Sharma’s 69 off 47 balls and Agarwal’s blistering 83 off just 46 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, powered Sunrisers Hyderabad to a formidable total of 200/5 in 20 overs.

Akash Madhwal emerged as the star bowler for Mumbai Indians, taking four wickets for 37 runs. Despite his efforts, Mumbai Indians faced a challenging chase of 201 runs. However, their skipper, Rohit Sharma, and Cameron Green formed a formidable 128-run partnership for the second wicket, bringing Mumbai Indians back into the game.

Green, in an outstanding display of batting prowess, achieved his first-ever IPL century, remaining unbeaten on 100 off 47 balls, featuring eight fours and eight sixes. A quick cameo by Suryakumar Yadav (25* off 16 balls) sealed the victory for Mumbai Indians, winning the match by eight wickets with two overs to spare.

For his exceptional century, Cameron Green was awarded the well-deserved “Player of the Match” title, adding another feather to his cap.

The Aftermath of the Record

After an impressive knock of 69 runs, Sharma’s innings came to an end when he was dismissed by Akash Madhwal. Delighted with the chance to bat at the top of the order, Vivrant expressed his happiness and credited his hard work in the nets for his success.

Despite not getting a chance to showcase his skills earlier in the season, Vivrant displayed patience and took on the spinners, contributing to SunRisers Hyderabad’s strong position. He expressed contentment with his performance and the opportunity given to him at the top of the order.

With this impressive debut performance, Vivrant Sharma has undoubtedly made a mark on the IPL stage, and cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate his future exploits in the tournament.
