Wanindu Hasaranga’s impressive all-round performance led B-Love Kandy to a convincing 89-run win as they thrashed Galle Titans in the 12th match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL). Hasaranga, who proved his outstanding form in this year’s LPL, delivered an amazing cricketing performance. He unleashed rapid innings, scoring a remarkable 65 runs off just 27 balls. Following his explosive batting, Hasaranga continued to make an impact by dismantling Galle Titans’ batting lineup, claiming four wickets while conceding only 17 runs.

After winning the toss, Galle Titans’ captain Dasun Shanaka chose to field first. Their decision paid off initially as Richard Ngarava dismissed Mohammad Haris early in the match. Despite this early breakthrough, Galle Titans couldn’t fully exploit the advantage, allowing Fakhar Zaman and Dinesh Chandimal to build a strong partnership of 49 runs. Their collaboration was broken when Tabraiz Shamsi removed Chandimal, who had contributed 75 runs to the team’s total in nine overs.

Fakhar Zaman found a partner in Angelo Mathews as they carefully constructed their innings. Zaman took on the role of anchoring the batting while Mathews played a cautious role. As the innings progressed, Zaman’s confidence grew, and he displayed an impressive hitting spree by smashing a four and a six consecutively off Tabraiz Shamsi’s deliveries, boosting the team’s score.

After this brief surge, Zaman added three more runs to his individual total before being caught in a spectacular manner at long-on by Ngarava, off Lahiru Samarakoon’s bowling. Zaman’s innings, comprising 45 runs from 35 balls, featured three boundaries and two sixes.

With the score at 103-3 in 12.1 overs, Wanindu Hasaranga stepped onto the field, aiming to replicate his game-changing half-century (52 not out off 22 balls) from the previous match against Jaffna Kings. Hasaranga wasted no time in asserting his dominance over the Galle Titans’ bowlers, quickly amassing 38 runs from just 15 deliveries. The momentum continued as Angelo Mathews added to the excitement by hitting a six off Kasun Rajitha’s bowling.

The two batsmen, Hasaranga and Mathews, combined effectively, forging a crucial partnership that contributed 87 runs from only 38 balls. This partnership proved vital in shaping B-Love Kandy’s innings.

The dynamic partnership finally came to an end when Angelo Mathews was dismissed with the team’s score at 190, thanks to an exceptional catch by Kasun Rajitha. Mathews contributed a swift 40 runs from 23 balls, which included three boundaries and two sixes.

While the partnership was broken, Wanindu Hasaranga remained at the crease with the goal of reaching the 200-run milestone. However, his innings was concluded when he was caught at mid-wicket by Shevon Daniel off the bowling of Kasun Rajitha. Hasaranga’s explosive innings of 64 runs from 27 deliveries featured nine boundaries and two sixes.

The following delivery saw Isuru Udana scoring two runs, taking the team’s total to 200, a significant milestone and the first of LPL 2023. The innings concluded at 203 runs with the loss of five wickets. Lahiru Samarakoon took two wickets for 31 runs, while Shamsi, Rajitha, and Ngarava secured one wicket each.

Galle Titans initiated their challenging pursuit with a strong start, as Lasith Croospulle managed to score 11 runs off the opening over, delivered by Mathews. Nonetheless, Mujeeb Ur Rahman quickly disrupted their momentum by dismissing Shevon Daniel (0) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (5) in successive overs. Lasith Croospulle continued his attacking approach from the opposite end, but his cameo of 27 off 17 balls was curtailed when he was bowled by Hasaranga in his first over.

Hasaranga further tightened the screws by removing a struggling Shakib Al Hasan (11 off 12), reducing Galle Titans to a challenging 47-6 in the ninth over. A resilient partnership between Ashan Priyanjan and Lahiru Samarakoon emerged, adding a solid 62 runs off 45 balls. However, the mounting required run rate created pressure for both batsmen.

As the pressure escalated, both Priyanjan and Samarakoon succumbed to the demands of the run rate, falling victim to Nuwan Pradeep in the span of three deliveries. This left the Titans needing an improbable 93 runs from four overs with just two wickets remaining.

In the subsequent over, Hasaranga claimed the final two wickets off consecutive deliveries, securing a comprehensive victory for B-Love Kandy. Samarakoon led the Titans’ scoring with a top-score of 36 off 25 balls, including one boundary and four sixes. Wanindu Hasaranga concluded with exceptional figures of four wickets for 17 runs, while Pradeep secured three wickets.

This triumph boosted B-Love Kandy’s net run rate, propelling them to the top of the LPL 2023 table, while Galle Titans found themselves at the bottom. Next up, Galle Titans will take on Dambulla Aura in their upcoming game on August 11, while B-Love Kandy is set to face reigning champions Jaffna Kings on August 12.
