Sri Lanka Beats Netherlands in ICC Qualifiers Final
Sri Lanka showcased their dominance in the duel between the two ICC World Cup 2023 qualifiers on Sunday, delivering a resounding victory over the Netherlands with a commanding margin of 128 runs. The final of the tournament, held in Harare, witnessed an exciting display of cricketing skills. The Dutch captain, Scott Edwards, won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that initially seemed to pay off as his team managed to dismiss the Sri Lankan batting lineup for a modest total of 233 runs in 48 overs.
The Dutch bowlers put up an impressive show, led by their star performer Bas de Leede, who had played a pivotal role in their victory over Scotland, securing their spot in the World Cup. However, their batting lineup struggled against the disciplined Sri Lankan attack, faltering early on and finding themselves at a precarious score of 39-3. Dilshan Madushanka, the man of the match, stole the show by claiming three crucial wickets, leaving the Dutch team in a mess. Eventually, they gave in to the mounting pressure and were bundled out for a meager total of 105 runs in just over 23 overs.
Sri Lanka’s coach, Chris Silverwood, was delighted with his team’s performance, as they accomplished all the targets set for them in the tournament.
Speaking about their achievement, Silverwood expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Our first goal was to qualify, and we have successfully achieved that. The second goal was to win the tournament, and fortunately, we have accomplished that as well. We can return home with a sense of fulfillment.”
He emphasized the importance of the confidence gained from this tournament, believing it would serve as a valuable asset for the upcoming quadrennial showpiece, the World Cup, which was scheduled to commence in India on October 5.
On the other hand, Edwards, the Dutch captain, attributed their heavy defeat to their inability to cope with the Sri Lankan spinners. Despite the loss, he took immense pride in his team’s overall achievement, recognizing the significance of participating in a ten-team World Cup. Edwards expressed his excitement, saying, “It is obviously massive for our guys and for our supporters back home. The opportunity to play in a ten-team World Cup is huge for us. We will cherish this experience and hopefully deliver a few exceptional performances in India.”
The match had begun on a positive note for the Netherlands when they took to the field. Edwards was particularly pleased with his team’s bowling performance, especially without the services of Bas de Leede, who had returned to his English county club, Durham. Vikramjit Singh played a crucial role, dismissing both Sri Lankan openers, including the prized wicket of the in-form Pathum Nissanka, whose hopes of scoring a third successive century were dashed as he departed for 23 runs, caught by Aryan Dutt.
Sri Lanka’s innings gained stability through a fine knock of 57 runs by Sahan Arahchige, who was ably supported by contributions from wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis (43) and Charith Asalanka (36). Their collective efforts formed the backbone of Sri Lanka’s total.
However, it was Dilshan Madushanka’s destructive bowling spell that turned the tide in Sri Lanka’s favor. The Dutch batsmen struggled to handle his deliveries, with opener Max O’Dowd helplessly watching his partners depart at regular intervals from the other end. O’Dowd fought valiantly and managed to score a resilient 33 off 63 balls before being clean bowled by Maheesh Theekshana. Theekshana continued his impressive performance, claiming four wickets for 31 runs, as he dismantled the Dutch tail, ensuring Sri Lanka’s emphatic victory.
