In an exhilarating final match of the tri-series tournament in Abu Dhabi, Bangladesh’s U-19s emerged victorious over Afghanistan U-19s by six wickets, thanks to an incredible performance by left-arm spinner Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby.

Rabby was the star of the match, taking six wickets for just 29 runs to bowl out Afghanistan U-19s for a modest 143 all out. After Maruf Mridha took the first wicket, Rabby put on a stunning display of spin bowling to remove key Afghan players one after the other.

Despite a solid partnership between Haroon Khan and Khalid Taniwal, the rest of the Afghan team failed to contribute much, and they were ultimately bowled out in the 37th over.

In response, Bangladesh U-19s got off to a shaky start, losing Ashiqur Rahaman Shibli in the fourth over. However, Jishan Alam’s quick-fire 35 off 19 balls injected some momentum into the innings.

Chowdhury Md Rizwan and Ariful Islam then put on a crucial 53-run stand, but both were eventually dismissed after making valuable contributions. However, the young Tigers managed to see off the chase without losing any more wickets to claim the trophy.

What to Know About the Tri-Series

The tri-series tournament started on March 18, with Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh as the participants. Before the start of the tournament, the 19 Men’s national teams of each country travelled to Abu Dhabi where the series would take place.

The tournament is a series of matches in the 50-overs format (Youth ODIs). The tour started with two one-day games between Afghanistan U19 and Bangladesh U19 on March 13th and 15th. This was followed by the Tri-series that also involved Sri Lanka U19 from March 18th to 30th, 2023.

All three nations will be part of the upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) U19 Men’s Asia Cup tournament in December 2023. Following this, the ICC U19 Men’s World Cup tournament will take place in Sri Lanka early next year.

The tour to Abu Dhabi provided a great platform for these U19 teams to prepare and hone their skills before these big events.

What’s Next

The victory against Afghanistan was especially sweet for Bangladesh U-19s, who had lost their first two matches in the tournament before staging a dramatic comeback to reach the final.

Rabby’s incredible performance in the final saw him finish the tournament with 10 wickets, cementing his status as a rising star in the world of cricket.

Overall, it was an exciting and hard-fought tournament, with Sri Lanka also putting in a strong showing.

Following the matches between Bangladesh and Afghanistan, the Afghanistan U19 and Sri Lanka U19 teams will play two matches in the 50-overs format on April 01st and 03rd.

What Else is Going on With Bangladesh

While Bangladesh’s U19 team was playing in the tri-series, the national team was playing against Ireland in a T20 series that recently concluded.

The match took place in Chittagong, and Bangladesh sealed the three-match Twenty20 series against Ireland with a comfortable 77-run victory, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Bangladesh had earlier won the first match of the series, and the teams will meet for a one-off Test in April.
