Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans will be disappointed to learn that star all-rounder Ben Stokes will be absent from the team during the upcoming IPL 2023 playoffs. Stokes, who has had limited appearances this season, will be returning home to prepare for the England VS Ireland Test series and the highly anticipated Ashes.
According to reports from ESPN Cricinfo, Stokes will make his exit after the crucial CSK vs Delhi Capitals match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, May 20. While it is unlikely that he will feature in the game, Stokes will be packing his bags and heading back to the UK, making him unavailable for the playoffs.

Stokes and the IPL

This decision by Stokes does not come as a surprise, as he had previously expressed his desire to leave the IPL early even before joining the Super Kings. England’s match against Ireland, scheduled to begin on June 1, is seen as a warm-up game for the upcoming Ashes series, where Stokes is expected to lead the English side. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to announce the squad for the Ashes in the coming days.

During the IPL 2023 season, Stokes has had a limited impact on the field, playing only two games. In those matches, he scored 7 and 8 runs respectively, and bowled just one over, conceding 18 runs. Unfortunately, Stokes was sidelined due to a toe injury and faced another setback, which kept him out of the CSK side. However, he has recently resumed training and has been available for the past week.

Despite his return to training, there are still concerns regarding Stokes’ ability to bowl. The 31-year-old has been grappling with a troublesome knee, making it unlikely for him to bowl full-time. CSK coach Stephen Fleming has acknowledged that Stokes was primarily in the team as batting cover. However, with the outstanding form of Devon Conway, it seems unlikely that Stokes will make it into the playing XI.

As CSK fights for their spot in the IPL 2023 playoffs, they will have to manage without the services of Ben Stokes. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the team will have to rely on other players to step up and deliver during this crucial phase of the tournament. Fans will be hoping for a strong performance from the remaining CSK squad as they aim to secure their place in the knockouts and chase their fifth IPL title.

Reports on the England VS Ireland Test series

As for the Test series that Stokes will be leaving for, England has announced its squad. Ben Stokes will lead the 15-player team, with Ollie Pope as the vice-captain. Jonny Bairstow, who had been injured in a golf accident, has returned to the team, while Ben Foakes has been left out.

Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes have also made a comeback to the squad. James Anderson, who sustained an injury while playing for Lancashire, is included as well. Unfortunately, Jofra Archer will be absent due to a stress fracture in his right elbow. The English team will face a challenging test against Ireland, followed by the home Ashes series against Australia starting on June 16.

The four-day Test will be played from June 1 to June 4 and will be only the second Test between the two nations. The first one, played in 2019, was also a four-day affair that England won by 143 runs.

England will be looking forward to getting some game time before facing their arch-rivals, Australia, in the home Ashes series. The team will hope to continue its winning streak against Ireland and carry the momentum into the Ashes.
