Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal has created history by becoming the highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The leg-spinner achieved this feat in a league match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Thursday, May 11th, when he picked up his 184th wicket in the tournament.
Chahal, who had tied with Dwayne Bravo in the previous fixture, now holds the top position with 186 wickets in 143 matches. This was a momentous achievement for Chahal, who has played in the IPL since 2011.
Speaking to the broadcaster after breaking the record, Chahal expressed his disbelief, stating that he never even thought about it when he started playing the IPL.

Chahal’s IPL Story

Chahal played his debut IPL match at Eden Gardens in 2013, representing the Mumbai Indians. However, he played only one match for them before moving to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2014, where he established himself as the premier spinner for the franchise. Chahal is the only bowler to have taken more than 100 wickets for RCB, having scalped 139 wickets in 113 matches for them.

Although the Bengaluru-based franchise surprisingly released him in 2022, Chahal was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals. In his first season with the Royals, Chahal won the Purple Cap by taking 27 wickets in 17 matches. He has been in great form this season and has already taken 21 wickets in nine matches, two more than Mohammed Shami.

Chahal’s success in the IPL has earned him recognition at the international level as well. He is also the top wicket-taker for India in T20I cricket, with 91 strikes in 75 matches at an economy rate of 8.13. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is just behind Chahal, with 90 wickets in 87 T20Is.

Chahal’s journey has had its fair share of ups and downs, but he has always bounced back stronger. He believes that his close ones have been instrumental in his success. His performance in the IPL has been outstanding, and his breaking the record for the highest wicket-taker is a testament to his skill and talent.

The record-breaking feat occurred at the same venue where Chahal made his IPL debut in 2013, adding to the significance of the moment. The leg-spinner has shown that there is still a place for old-school leg spin in T20 cricket, proving that he is a force to be reckoned with in the format.

Other Results from the Match

Aside from the record, the spinners are dominating the list of bowlers with the most scalps in IPL, with Chahal now leading the pack. Following him is Dwayne Bravo, who has 182 wickets, followed by Piyush Chawla (174), Amit Mishra (172), and R Ashwin (171). Chahal’s form suggests that he could breach the 200-wicket mark in IPL 2024.

Following the match, Chahal’s achievement has made headlines worldwide, and cricket fans around the globe have congratulated him on social media. Several cricket legends, including Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, have also praised him for his outstanding achievement.

The player has come a long way since his debut in 2013, and this record-breaking feat is a culmination of his hard work and dedication to the sport.
