Galle Titans secured a dominant eight-wicket victory against Colombo Strikers in the final group stage match of the Lanka Premier League at the R. Premadasa Stadium today. This win solidified their position at the second spot on the points table. This crucial win grants the Titans dual chances of advancing to the final, setting them up for a face-off against Dambulla Aura in Qualifier 1 on Thursday.

In the event of a loss, the Titans will still have another opportunity as they are slated to encounter the victor of the Eliminator match between B-Love Kandy and Jaffna Kings, also scheduled for Thursday.

With the imperative of securing a 65-run victory to secure the second position, Galle Titans faced a pivotal challenge. However, the tables turned dramatically as they managed to dismiss Colombo Strikers for a meager total of only 74 runs. Their task set at achieving a target of 75 runs within 11.1 overs, Galle Titans accomplished this objective with ease.

Following a compelling performance by spinners Tabraiz Shamsi and Seekkuge Prasanna that dismantled the Colombo Strikers’ batting lineup, it was opener Lasith Croosppulle who emerged as the standout for the Galle Titans’ batting unit. Taking charge after losing two wickets early on with just 19 runs on the board in the fourth over, Croosppulle assumed the role of the hero.

Croospulle, delivering an unbeaten innings of 42 from 25 balls, comprising four boundaries and three sixes, joined forces with Shakib Al Hasan. Together, they orchestrated an unbroken partnership of 56 runs in a mere 30 balls. This remarkable collaboration paved the way for Galle Titans to swiftly reach the target within just 8.3 overs.

In the initial stages, right-arm paceman Lahiru Kumara made his mark by dismissing the Colombo Strikers’ openers, Pathum Nissanka and Babar Azam, both of whom struggled once more. This significant breakthrough occurred with the team’s score at 19 runs in the fourth over.

Subsequently, the left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi assumed control, wreaking havoc on the Colombo Strikers’ batting lineup. In a swift succession, he claimed two wickets in just three balls, causing their score to plummet to 37 for 4 in the seventh over.

Nuwanidu Fernando and Mohammad Nawaz managed a brief partnership of 26 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Fernando fell victim to Shamsi, marking his third wicket, with the team’s total at 63 for 5. Shortly thereafter, Shamsi struck again, dismissing Nawaz when the score was at 68 for 6, leaving the Colombo Strikers in a challenging position.

The Colombo Strikers’ batsmen displayed disappointing batting form, with some reckless shots leading to their own dismissals. Adding to their woes, right-arm spinner Seekkuge Prasanna exacerbated their troubles by claiming key wickets. He managed to dismiss skipper Chamika Karunaratne, Shoriful Islam, and Jeffrey Vandersay, almost wrapping up their batting lineup. The final blow to the Colombo Strikers’ innings came from Shakib Al Hasan, bringing their batting effort to a conclusion.

Their efforts resulted in a meager total of just 74 runs, which incidentally marks the lowest score in the tournament thus far. This record was previously held by Jaffna Kings, who also faced a similar struggle against Galle Titans and managed only 89 runs.
