Erling Haaland, the forward for Manchester City, has been honored as the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season. The Norwegian player clinched the award, surpassing his teammate Kevin De Bruyne and soccer standout Lionel Messi from Inter Miami. Haaland became a part of Manchester City at the beginning of the previous season after transferring from Borussia Dortmund.

The award was announced at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, marking the culmination of an outstanding week for the forward. Just a few days earlier, he was honored as the PFA Players’ Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Erling Haaland, at 23 years old, had an exceptional 2022/23 season, achieving the remarkable feat of winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League, known as the illustrious Treble. He made a significant impact in the Premier League, surpassing the goal record set by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole, with an impressive tally of 36 goals. Additionally, he recorded a remarkable total of 52 goals across all competitions, setting a new record for the highest number of goals scored by a player at a Premier League club in all competitions.

He also played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s win in the Champions League. Their victory came with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan, marking the club’s first-ever title in the tournament. Haaland’s exceptional performance was a key factor in this achievement. He remarkably scored 36 goals in 35 matches for Manchester City during the previous season, earning him the accolade of being the highest goal scorer.

His impressive goal tally also earned him the distinction of holding the record for the most goals by a player for an English club in a single Champions League season, a feat he shares with former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Furthermore, at the age of 23, he not only became the youngest but also the fastest player to reach 35 goals in the Champions League. Five of these goals were scored during a remarkable 7-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the Round of 16. This accomplishment also made him just the third player in history to score five goals in a single Champions League match.

“I am honoured to have been named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year. There are so many top talents across Europe who could have won this award, so I am really grateful to everyone who voted for me,” said Haaland.

“We have an incredible team here at Manchester City and this accolade wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my teammates, coaches and all of the staff at the Club. It was an incredible season for all of us and for me personally after securing the Treble. Lifting my first Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League was an incredible feeling and it’s a feeling we all want to share again this season.”

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s coach Pep Guardiola has been honored as the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year for the 2022/23 season.

The 52-year-old Spanish coach secured the award by outperforming competitors Simone Inzaghi of Inter and Luciano Spalletti of Napoli.

Guardiola’s leadership guided his team to an impressive treble, capturing the Premier League, FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League – a historic first-time win for Manchester City in the latter tournament. This marked Guardiola’s third victory in the Champions League, a feat accomplished by only four coaches in history.
