Erling Haaland, the striker for Manchester City, was awarded the PFA Players’ Player of the Year on Tuesday in recognition of his outstanding performance during his debut season with the team, which achieved a treble victory.

Haaland’s impressive achievement of scoring 52 goals contributed to City’s historic Treble victory, earning him the title of the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year. This recognition adds to his previous accolade as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, which he received in May.

Haaland’s remarkable tally of 36 goals played a pivotal role in City’s triumph in the Premier League, where they clinched the title. Additionally, his contributions were instrumental in securing victory in the FA Cup and culminated with the team lifting the Champions League trophy in June.

This debut season in English football will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most remarkable, and rightfully so, the Norwegian star has garnered well-deserved individual accolades to match his exceptional performance.

In the voting, the 23-year-old received more votes than his teammates Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones, along with Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and the former Tottenham player Harry Kane, who has now moved to Bayern Munich.

The revamped PFA awards were particularly convenient for Haaland, as they were hosted in Manchester instead of the customary location in London. At the age of 23, Haaland graced the red carpet event. The awards ceremony broke away from the tradition of an end-of-season dinner and instead embraced a contemporary awards night held in August at the Lowry Hotel.

“It’s an honour to win this prestigious award. To be recognised by your competitors is a great feeling and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me,” Haaland said.

“It was an unforgettable season for the team and for me personally. Winning the treble was something I never imagined, so to achieve that with such a special group of players was an amazing feeling.”

“We created some incredible memories last season, but now we want to do the same again this year. We have started the season well and we need to keep going.”

Bukayo Saka, a standout talent for Arsenal, secured the Young Player of the Year award following his unforgettable performances both for his club and the England national team. Saka, at the age of 21, impressively netted 22 goals in total for both his club and country during the past season. He also played a pivotal role for England in the World Cup and significantly contributed to Arsenal’s pursuit of the title.

Daly and James played crucial roles for the England national team during their journey to the Women’s World Cup final, which unfortunately ended in a loss to Spain earlier this month.

Villa’s Daly accomplished an impressive feat by scoring 22 goals in the Women’s Super League last season. It’s worth noting that she had previously played as a left-back for the Lionesses’ successful Euros campaign in 2022.

Director of Football Txiki Begiristain expressed his delight at seeing Haaland receive the award.

“We are so delighted for Erling that he has won this award,” he said. “His goal-scoring record last season was obviously incredible and that alone marks him out as a special player. But his influence all over the pitch continues to grow and he has so much drive to keep improving even more and we are convinced he will get even better.”

“Erling is a world class player and a great guy to have in the dressing room and we’re very proud of him,” he added.
