Rahmanullah Gurbaz Registers New IPL Record
Exciting news for cricket fans as Kolkata Knight Riders’ opening batsman, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, became the first Afghan player to score a fifty in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday. The 21-year-old played a magnificent 57-run knock to rescue KKR from a tough spot against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Kolkata Knight Riders got Gurbaz from Gujarat Titans during the trade window, and he has proven his value to the team since then.
What to Know About Gurbaz
Gurbaz is one of the rising stars in T20 cricket and the Knight Riders traded the Afghanistan batter from Gujarat Titans ahead of the ongoing season. He continued with his immaculate strokes, even as KKR lost wickets at the other end. Gurbaz brought up his maiden IPL fifty in the 10th over with a maximum off Karn Sharma, becoming the first player from Afghanistan to smash an IPL fifty. He went on to hit a brilliant 57 off 44 balls.
Gurbaz is the owner of over 3,100 runs in the format, having played 126 matches with a strike rate of over 150. He has now raced to 20 T20 half-centuries and also owns a ton.
KKR’s Performance
KKR, who suffered a defeat in their opening match, were eager to bounce back and register their first win of the season.
The match witnessed a remarkable performance from KKR’s new recruit Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The wicket-keeper batsman, who was traded from Gujarat Giants, played a blistering inning to score his maiden IPL half-century at the iconic Eden Gardens. In doing so, Gurbaz also became the first Afghanistan batsman to score a fifty in the history of the IPL.

But that’s not all. Gurbaz also created history by breaking a unique record during the KKR vs RCB match. The 21-year-old hit his 200th six in T20 matches against a strong RCB team, cementing his reputation as one of the most explosive batsmen in the world.

Thanks to Gurbaz’s heroics, KKR posted a massive 204 runs on the board, setting a challenging target for RCB. It remains to be seen whether the talented player will be given a long run to prove his worth on the side.

The match was a dream come true for the young opener of Kolkata Knight Riders. His effort helped KKR secure their first win of the season by 81 runs, with Shah Rukh Khan in attendance. Following the game, Gurbaz spoke to the man of the match Shardul Thakur and expressed his awe at meeting the Bollywood superstar.
During the conversation, Thakur credited former India cricketer Virender Sehwag for his gutsy brand of cricket, which inspired him after the match-winning knock.
Thakur shared that he didn’t know where the idea of playing a gutsy knock came from, but he trusted his subconscious mind and worked hard in the nets.
The win was a much-needed boost for KKR, who had lost their first game of the season to Punjab Kings. The team will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming games and make a strong statement in the IPL 2023 season.
