The 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) has started with a bang, and Sanju Samson has made an excellent start to his campaign with a half-century for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Samson’s knock of 55 in 32 balls helped his team post an impressive score on the board.

The match started with Sunrisers Hyderabad winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. However, RR’s opening pair of Jos Butler and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave them a brilliant start, making 85 runs in the first six overs. This score was RR’s highest-ever score in a powerplay and the sixth-highest of any team in the 15-year history of the IPL.

But, it was Sanju Samson who stole the show, becoming the first player to score 700 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL history. He beat Virat Kohli to the record, as the RCB star is second on the list. Samson has a brilliant record against SRH, with one century and three half-centuries to his name. He reached the three-figure mark against them in the 2019 season at the same venue as today’s match.

Speaking of the match, Rajasthan Royals got off to a fantastic start with Jos Buttler smashing 54 runs off just 22 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. Promising uncapped Indian Yashasvi Jaiswal also scored an identical 54 off 37 balls, including nine fours. Samson joined the party and played a captain’s knock to take his team to a huge score.

Meanwhile, SRH’s chase got off to a terrible start as Trent Boult dismissed Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi in the first over without any score. Harry Brook’s debut wasn’t memorable either as he was dismissed for a mere 13 runs.

Washington Sundar and Glenn Phillips also failed to make a significant contribution, and Mayank Agarwal’s resistance was ended by Yuzvendra Chahal, who took four wickets in total.

Chahal became the second-highest wicket-taker in IPL history and equaled RR bowling coach Lasith Malinga’s record of 170 scalps.

Despite the early wickets, Adul Samad (32 not out) and Umran Malik (19 not out) produced some late fireworks to take their team to a respectable score of 131 for 8 in their 20 overs. However, it was not enough as Rajasthan Royals won the game comfortably by 72 runs.

Speaking to the press after the match, Samson heaped praise on Chahal, saying that the leg-spinner was enjoying his time with the franchise. He appreciated the cricketer’s chilled-out attitude and said that Chahal’s presence makes a huge impact.

Chahal was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction and was bought by RR for ₹6.50 crore. During the first match of IPL 2023, he registered figures of 4/17 and got the key wickets of Mayank Agarwal and Harry Brook.

Samson was also all praise for opening batter Jos Buttler, who was the Player of the Match for his blistering knock of 54 off just 22 balls against SRH. The RR captain said that Buttler brings a lot of positive energy to the team, and his role, along with everyone else’s, is equally important.

Overall, it was a fantastic performance by RR, who will be looking to build on this win and carry the momentum forward in the tournament. The SRH team will need to regroup and come back stronger in the next match.
