Shakib, Liton, and Afif are Drafted for the LPL
The excitement for cricket fans is building up as the fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is just around the corner. And the recent news that Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, Liton Das, and Afif Hossain have registered in the players’ draft has added to the excitement.
The LPL will begin on July 30th, and the draft for the tournament is scheduled for June 4th. The deadline for more players to put their names forward is May 15th. The tournament is going to be a blast, and the addition of these talented Bangladesh players only adds to the excitement.
However, their national commitment might pose availability issues for the entirety of the tournament. Bangladesh is set to host Afghanistan in June, and the trio might have to prioritize their national duties. Nevertheless, their inclusion in the players’ draft has created a buzz among cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
Other Players Participating
It is worth mentioning that each team can include six foreign cricketers in their squad. Along with the Bangladesh trio, some other big names like Matthew Wade, Shaun Marsh, Usman Khawaja, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Naseem Shah, Wahab Riaz, Mitchell Santner, Kieron Pollard, and Dwayne Bravo were also included in the draft.
Among the players, West Indies stars Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard have agreed to participate in the first part of the LPL tournament due to their commitments to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Statements on the IPL
Mr. Anil Mohan, Founder and CEO of Dubai-based production giant IPG, the official promoter of LPL, said, “This year’s tournament includes an exciting list of players. I am sure fans can look forward to some scintillating performances from them.”
And Mr. Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director of the Lanka Premier League, said, “The tournament has been scheduled for July and August this year, as it sits well with Sri Lanka’s international calendar. It also gives us the best opportunity to attract top international talent.”
Additional Details on the LPL
When the details of the LPL were revealed back in March, it was confirmed that the tournament will be played in three international venues and feature five teams, with a maximum squad size of 20 players and 6 overseas cricketers allowed to be signed.
It will be the first time that the tournament will be played during this time of the year. The LPL was earlier played in 2020 for the first time, but the tournament was pushed to December due to Covid-19. The second season ended up delayed due to the second Covid wave. Then the third edition got postponed due to Sri Lanka’s economic crisis in 2022.
The tournament director, Samantha Dodanwela, stated that “conducting the tournament during this period gives us the best possible opportunity to attract top international talent and also suits well with Sri Lanka’s international cricket calendar.”
The LPL has quickly become a fan favorite since its inception in 2020, and this year’s tournament promises to be even more exciting. With so many talented cricketers set to participate, the LPL is definitely going to be a treat for cricket fans.
