Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has been fined 10% of his match fees for breaching the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Code of Conduct during the recent match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The incident occurred during the IPL 2023 match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Kohli admitted to a Level 1 offense under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. As per the rules, the Match Referee’s decision in such cases is final and binding, and no formal hearing was required.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Kohli accepted the sanction, but did not disclose any details about the incident that led to the breach.

What is the Code of Conduct?

The ICC Code of Conduct is a set of rules to make sure everyone involved in cricket behaves properly both on and off the field. This helps to keep cricket’s good reputation and popularity. The code also sets out a clear and fair process to deal with any improper behavior quickly.

While the BCCI did not share details on Kohli’s breach, it is believed that Kohli’s aggressive celebration after the dismissal of CSK all-rounder Shivam Dube could have been the reason behind the breach. Dube was threatening to take the game away from RCB with his big hitting, and his wicket was crucial for the team.

Other Offenses

Kohli, one of the best batters of the modern era, has had numerous run-ins with opposing players in the past due to his aggressive approach and unbridled emotions on the field. In a previous IPL match, he was reprimanded after hitting a plastic chair with his bat following his dismissal.

The IPL has also fined Kolkata Knight Riders captain Nitish Rana and Mumbai Indians’ Hrithik Shokeen for a heated altercation during a match at the Wankhede Stadium on April 16. Rana was fined 25 percent of his match fees, while Shokeen was fined 10 percent for the same incident.

What Happened in the Match

Kohli, who was captaining RCB, was not in great form during the match. He was dismissed for just 6 runs when the ball hit his pads and trickled onto the stumps in the first over of the team’s chase.

Despite the early setback, RCB made a strong comeback through the efforts of captain Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell, who both scored quickfire fifties. However, their dismissals in quick succession derailed RCB’s chase, and they eventually fell eight runs short of the target.

CSK had their challenges during the game, but the duo of RCB skipper Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell kept them worried until the final overs. In the end, CSK managed to secure the win.

After the match, RCB skipper Du Plessis praised the efforts of his team but expressed disappointment that they couldn’t finish the game in the final overs. “We couldn’t manage to finish it off, but we got to move on,” he said.

Despite the sanction, Kohli remains one of the best batsmen of the modern game, and his contributions will be crucial for Royal Challengers Bangalore as they seek to bounce back from their defeat to Chennai.
